Mara Kimmel, Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Alaska, had the following reaction to the announcement of the presidential election for Donald Trump:
“The outcome of this election represents unprecedented change for our country’s democratic processes and institutions - in Alaska and beyond. In these times, the rights and liberties of Alaskans, including of women, immigrants, the LGBTQIA2S+ community, and others, are imperiled. At the ACLU of Alaska, we are ready to do what this organization has done throughout our history – stay true to our principles and hold all levels of government – local, state, and federal -- accountable to the Constitution.
The ACLU of Alaska is resolute in our commitment to protect our democracy, expand access to the ballot box, advance racial justice, fight for Indigenous justice and protect immigrant rights, ensure reproductive freedom, and end mass incarceration.
We stand with the people of our state, to defend our rights and advance the aspiration that America and Alaska live up to our essential values. The ACLU of Alaska has been a safeguard for freedom for over 50 years. Together we can meet this moment and hold fast to ensure that democracy prevails.”
