Position Overview

The American Civil Liberties Union of Alaska seeks a Deputy Director who is dynamic, mission-driven, and committed to advancing the civil rights and liberties of the people of Alaska. We are actively striving to grow our staff with individuals from underrepresented and marginalized groups who have experience in and share our passion for civil rights and justice.

The Deputy Director will operationalize the strategy and delivery of an exceptional employee experience; one that is rooted in transparency, collaboration, equity, integrity, and accountability. As a member of the leadership team, the Deputy Director will partner in the development and communication a clear strategic direction that aligns with the organization’s mission, vision, and values. In addition, the Deputy Director will work closely with the Executive Director to enhance systems and structures for good governance, human resources, and performance management, and ensure values and practices that support a new generation of civil rights leaders.

Core Responsibilities:

Leadership and Strategy

  • Support organization-wide strategic planning and annual budgeting and ensure successful implementation process by establishing benchmarks and reporting systems alongside the Executive Director (ED).
  • Work with the Executive Director and the leadership team on large, organizational-wide decision-making to ensure optimal internal success, impact, and adherence to EDIB aspirations.
  • Stand in for the Executive Director as needed/requested.
  • Serve as staff liaison to the Board of Directors Equity Officer and select Board Committees.
  • Ensure that operational and administrative systems support the equitable and inclusive treatment of staff, board, volunteers, clients, and members.
  • Work across ACLU of Alaska departments to build and support our integrated advocacy approach to our mission.
  • Contribute to the visibility of the organization by representing affiliate at events.

Strategic Alignment

  • Structure and co-lead our strategic planning and annual work planning processes.
  • Coordinate periodic progress-to-goals evaluations of annual and strategic plans.
  • Participate in key decisions around organizational priorities and what funding we choose to pursue.
  • Oversee complex and cross-departmental projects that contribute to our mission.
  • Provide ideas, input, and in some cases leadership for new programs.

Organizational Culture and Commitment to EDIB

  • Create and maintain strong systems for internal communication and inclusive decisionmaking.
  • Recruit and retain talented staff, develop staff leadership, and build high-functioning teams that reflects the affiliate’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging and that can design and execute ambitious agendas.
  • Help create a culture of ongoing learning and improvement through trainings on management and other best practices.
  • Create conflict resolution practices.
  • Identify and onboard technology that improves intra-office collaboration.
  • Help create a culture whereby giving and receiving feedback is an established norm.
  • Advance meaningful professional development opportunities for staff.
  • Ensure on-boarding and professional development and training opportunities.

Support Management Operations

  • Supervise Operations Manager and contract with human resources consultant and other external consultants as needed to ensure smooth operations of the organization.
  • In consultation with the Executive Director and Leadership Team, develop and maintain governance policies for organizational management, including fiscal and human resource functions.
  •  Improve systems that support effective collaboration of a geographically dispersed staff.
  • Collaborate with the ACLU National office on nationwide opportunities and programs for improving office operations, HR, conflict resolution, management, professional development, IT and related topics.
  • Partner with Executive Director and Department Directors on budgeting, tracking, and reporting finances.

  • Management experience supervising professional staff, managing budgets, and effectively handling multiple priorities and projects.
  • Experience with fiscal management, strategic planning, and familiarity with nonprofit financial reports.
  • Proven ability to build and nurture a calm and positive working environment, especially in high-intensity situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, keep organized in a fast-paced environment, manage simultaneous projects, and adjust strategy to changing demands.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues across departments.

Compensation

This is an exempt, full-time, at-will position. Salary is between $100,000-110,000 depending on experience and includes excellent benefits, including health, dental, life, and disability insurance, a 401(k) plan with an employer-match, and generous vacation, sick, and holiday leave.

Workplace Requirements

The ACLU of Alaska has a physical office space in Anchorage, Alaska and is a hybrid workplace with a mix of in-office and remote work. Anchorage-based employees should expect to schedule at least 2 to 3 in-office days per week and to attend bi-weekly staff meetings in person when possible.
