Alaska allows cities to reduce property taxes on elderly or disabled married couples, but wouldn't allow same-sex couples access to that benefit. The ACLU of Alaska, along with the national ACLU LGBT & AIDS Project and Davis Wright Tremaine, represented a group of same-sex domestic partners who both Alaska and Anchorage excluded from this otherwise widespread benefit. On their behalf, we asked a court to order both Alaska and Anchorage to make this property tax benefit available to same-sex domestic partners on the same terms as married couples.
Status: In April 2014, the Alaska Supreme Court ruled in our favor and ordered the state to begin providing the tax exemption to all loving, committed couples.
