Today, the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed what we have long believed: that the Constitution protects the right to marry for all loving, committed couples. We celebrate the historic decision and applaud this step forward towards equality and justice for all.
The ACLU has long been on the forefront of the fight for marriage equality. We made history in 1970 by filing the country’s first freedom-to-marry lawsuit, helped Edie Windsor take down the core of DOMA in 2013, and are co-counsel in two of the four cases that the Supreme Court heard in April 2015.
