Position Overview: 

The American Civil Liberties Union of Alaska seeks a Prison Project Intake Investigator who is dynamic, mission-driven, and committed to advancing the civil rights and liberties of the people of Alaska. They will work as part of the Alaska Prison Project who works to promote restorative justice, healing, community safety, diversion, and alternatives to incarceration to transform Alaska’s failing criminal legal system. 

 

Job Responsibilities include: 

Intake and Issue Monitoring 

  • Manage the Prison Project’s intake and case management system. 
  • Review and respond to information from incarcerated people, including written correspondence and phone calls. 
  • Conduct additional fact finding as necessary 
  • Track and document trends and flag emerging issues for the Prison Project on a regular basis. 
  • Supervise intake intern program in coordination with the Prison Project Director 

Maintain External Relations  

  • Maintain and develop relationships in the legal community, public, and with currently incarcerated and their loved ones. 
  • Participate in community stakeholder informational meetings. 

Legal and Policy Research and Writing  

  • Research administrative policies and practices related to criminal legal system. 
  • Provide fact finding support to the litigation team and policy initiatives. 
  • Provide written memos to the prison project team. 
  • Identify potential plaintiffs to the legal department. 
  • Work with legal team as needed on Prison Project matters  
  • Fact check and assist in annual updates to ACLU of Alaska Prisoner Rights Guide  
  • Support the Prison Project in tracking and documenting local, statewide, and national policies and litigation trends related to criminal legal systems. 

 

Minimum Qualifications 

  • JD preferred 
  • Familiarity with advocacy and policy related to criminal legal systems in Alaska required 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines while consistently delivering accurate and high-quality work. 
  • Strong computer skills, ideally proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Asana, Zoom, and Teams. 

Compensation 

This is an exempt, full-time, at-will position. Salary $60,000 to $80,000 annually, depending on experience and education. For non-attorneys, the salary range is $60,000-70,000; for attorneys, the salary range is $70,000-$80,000.
