The American Civil Liberties Union of Alaska seeks a Civic Engagement Specialist who is dynamic, mission-driven, and committed to advancing the civil rights and liberties of the people of Alaska. We are actively striving to grow our staff with individuals who are connected to the community and share our passion for civil rights and justice. 

The ACLU of Alaska’s Civic Engagement Specialist will support the organization’s mission to defend and protect the civil rights of Alaskans. The Civic Engagement Manager will assist in our efforts to build long-term power through volunteer engagement and training. As such, the position will engage and train Alaskans to advocate for their own rights, how to effectively reach decision-makers, and how to prepare information and resources to effectively advocate for their community. We aim to equip Alaskans with the tools necessary to effectively advocate for their rights.   

The Civic Engagement Specialist will have significant public-facing duties. Reliable transportation is necessary. The expected start date is on or around May 1, 2025. 

Specific responsibilities include:  

Volunteer Management 

  • Coordinating volunteer projects and opportunities across various ACLU of Alaska issue areas.  
  • Consistently communicating with volunteers and supplying them with tools for success while supporting ACLU of Alaska work.  

Advocacy growth and data management 

  • Grow the number of Alaskans who are connected to the ACLU of Alaska and statewide efforts for civil rights 
  • Maintain our database of contact information for Alaskans who are connected to the ACLU of Alaska through advocacy, volunteering, giving and more.  
  • Find creative ways to reach Alaskans in rural areas and share relevant ACLU of Alaska information and resources.  

Direct engagement and outreach 

  • Manage the “Know Your Rights” series, including presentations, webinars, and print and digital resource packets for the general public.  
  • Design and facilitate educational opportunities for civic engagement with various stakeholders in the statewide community. 
  • Lead tabling efforts at community events and coordinate ACLU of Alaska’s presence and role to support local partners. 

The Civic Engagement Specialist must demonstrate the following qualifications and skills: 

  • A commitment to and enthusiasm for civil rights and civil liberties 
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and to valuing differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstance 
  • Experience organizing people for political action, regardless of their political background 
  • Experience designing organizing strategy and executing organizing plans and tactics 
  • Experience planning events and working with teams to execute events, both in-person and online 
  • Experience managing online volunteer or advocacy management systems (ie. Voter Voice, Voter Action Network, EveryAction, etc.) 
  • Experience managing volunteers of all ages 
  • Experience and willingness to produce social media content for organizational channels 
  • Strong writing skills for print and digital platforms.  
  • Strong people skills and a willingness to put yourself in new situations to further the organization’s goals  
  • Ability to communicate quickly and effectively, verbally and in writing. 
  • Superior organizational abilities 
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts, research and analysis in a clear and concise manner 
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision 
  • Willingness and availability to work occasional evenings and weekends with advance notice, during times of office events or busy seasons 
  • Fluency, expertise and experience in multiple ACLU issue areas, a plus 
  • Willingness to travel 

Compensation 

This is a full-time, exempt position. Hourly wage is $24.00 – 33.00 depending on experience and includes excellent benefits, including health, dental, life, and disability insurance, a 401(k) plan with an employer-match, and generous vacation, sick, and holiday leave.

Workplace Requirements 

The ACLU of Alaska has a physical office space in Anchorage, Alaska and is a hybrid workplace with a mix of in-office and remote work.
