Location: Russian Jack Chalet
The main speaker is Alex Mar, who "has written a book about local hero Bill Pelke, titled Seventy Times Seven. (The NYT reviewed the book in April.) To make a long story very short: Bill was a young man in Indiana many years ago, when his grandmother was murdered by a group of young women, the leader of whom was a 16-year-old named Paula. Paula was sentenced to death, and Bill initially supported that. But he came to believe that his grandmother and his god taught compassion and wouldn’t want this girl to be executed. Bill devoted the rest of his life to anti-death penalty work. He spearheaded the effort to save Paula’s life, made friends with her, and was at the prison to greet her when she was released. Bill did phenomenal anti-death penalty work around the country and around the world. He died about two years ago."
Attendees will also hear from the ACLU of Alaska's Prison Project Director, Megan Edge.
