
K.L., a transgender woman, was told she had to submit proof that she underwent gender reassignment surgery in order to keep the driver's license that identifies her as a woman. We filed suit on her behalf in 2011, seeking to allow transgender individuals to correct the gender marker on their driver’s licenses without having to undergo major surgery.
Status: In March 2012, the court ordered the D.M.V. to correct the inappropriate rule within six months. In July, the lieutenant governor filed a regulation removing the surgery requirement; the new policy took effect the following month.
