In 2007, the ACLU of Alaska and the Center for Reproductive Rights successfully represented Planned Parenthood of Alaska and local doctors in their challenge to the Alaska Parental Consent Law. While this law allowed pregnant women younger than 17 to make medical decisions—including agreeing to major operations such as a Caesarean section—if they wanted to carry their pregnancies to term, it prevented these same women from making medical decisions if they wanted to end their pregnancies; in that case, their parents could veto the decision.
Status: The Alaska Supreme Court overturned this law because it unconstitutionally violated a woman's right to privacy. Read the Supreme Court's opinion here.
